The Clergy Seminar Series in Congregation-Based Spiritual Direction

A one year certificate program designed for parish ministers and other religious professionals who would like to place the practice of spiritual direction at the heart of congregational life, the Clergy Seminar Series in Congregation-Based Spiritual Direction builds on the gifts clergy already possess and adds the training, knowledge, and skills needed to confidently engage in the ministry of spiritual direction. During each three-day session of the seminar, participants will explore paradigms for congregation-based spiritual direction on the personal, communal, and missional levels. By the end of the training, participants will

  • Understand the history and concepts of spiritual direction.
  • Explore how congregation-based spiritual direction can transform a religious community.
  • Incorporate their pastoral care experience into short-term spiritual direction.
  • Gain experience in facilitating small group spiritual direction.
  • Add a spiritual formation focus to their supervision of lay leaders, especially those leading small group spiritual direction.
  • Develop a plan for bringing a spiritual-formation focus to their congregation.

The Clergy Seminar Series in Congregation-Based Spiritual Direction is a certificate program for religious professionals who seek to deepen connections among members of their community or congregational leadership. It is for people who long for deeper connections and desire to listen for spirit on behalf of the other. It is for people who want to learn a process that achieves that purpose.

In our world wide culture people long for deeper connections and relationships. Robert Wuthnow calls it practice oriented spirituality that helps the seeker find vocabulary for the ineffable. Spiritual Direction is a process deeply rooted on our theology of beloved community. In small group spiritual direction we experience the embodiment of religious community.

The purpose of the group is to observe the spirit at a work and to listen on behalf of one another. It is not to solve problems. A select small group of 3 to 5 people and a leader/director/companion meet regularly, no more than once a month.

We will meet three times for three days each time from October through May. These seminars will be a combination of didactic and practicum. Readings prior to the seminars will guide the discussions and reflections. In each seminar, time is spent in small groups practicing the arts of spiritual direction and peer supervision. Participants will convene their own local small groups after the first seminar. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet in peer supervision groups to reflect on their experiences offering individual and group spiritual direction.

  • To place the practice of individual and group spiritual direction within the context of progressive congregations.
  • To teach the process of short term individual and small group spiritual direction.
  • To understand the theology of beloved community in small group practice-oriented spirituality.
  • To create a peer group for the practice and supervision of individual and small group spirituality.
  • To listen for the spirit at work in our lives and work.
